The Choice (Dragon Heart Legacy, #3) – A Personal Reflection
Nora Roberts has long held a special place in my heart as the queen of romantic fantasies, and ever since I picked up The Awakening, I was enchanted by the world she crafted in The Dragon Heart Legacy. Breen Siobhan Kelly’s journey from the human realm into the magical realm of fae has been a thrilling ride, and I had been eagerly anticipating the conclusion. However, as I settled in to read The Choice, I couldn’t shake the sense of anxiety that perhaps my expectations had soared too high. Let me take you through my mixed emotions and thoughts on this third installment.
As the final chapter of Breen’s saga, The Choice carries with it the weight of unresolved mysteries, familial legacies, and the looming threat of a formidable god. Breen, now fully aware of her mixed heritage—as a human, fae, and demi-god—faces an array of challenges, from reconnecting with her roots to navigating the complex dynamics of her friendships. While Roberts’s gift for rich, vivid storytelling shone through in both The Awakening and The Becoming, this time, the magic felt diluted.
Unfortunately, I found the pacing to be a real issue. There were moments when the plot trudged along at a pace that felt more like a slow stroll through an enchanted forest than an exhilarating race to save the realm. I clocked several passages where the everyday minutiae were drawn out in excessive detail, making me feel like I was revisiting the same ground already firmly established in earlier books. What was once awe-inspiring in a world brimming with fantastical characters and breathtaking landscapes became a somewhat tedious rehearsal of routine actions—something I did not expect from Roberts.
The romance between Breen and her male counterpart felt notably diminished, relegated to the background. Those tender, heart-stirring moments I had come to cherish seemed few and far between. As a reader who thrives on character relationships and their emotional developments, I was left longing for those sparks that lit up their earlier encounters. Instead, the narrative swung toward a lack of urgency, especially as we approached the climactic battle with the godly antagonist—a moment I had envisioned as epic and sprawling but found to be surprisingly brief and anticlimactic.
Yet, I am fully aware that my experience is not universal. According to Goodreads, the book has been warmly embraced by 91% of readers, with many applauding its imaginative storytelling and vibrant characters. There’s a profound depth and richness in Roberts’s writing which continues to enchant a vast audience, so while it might not have resonated with my expectations, I suspect it will undoubtedly find its champions among other fantasy lovers.
If you adore romantic fantasies filled with diverse supernatural beings (and yes, glorious dragons that only the worthy can ride!), this series may still speak to you. Breen’s journey, filled with discovery and enchantment, holds an allure that many will appreciate, even if the pacing did lose me at times. The overarching themes of legacy, love, and self-discovery felt poignant and meaningful, reminding me that sometimes journeys, even when they veer off-course, can lead to valuable insights about our expectations and experiences.
As I close the book on The Choice, I find myself reflecting on my own reading journey. While it didn’t unfold in the manner I had hoped, it reminded me that every story can evoke a range of emotions and opinions. Sometimes, a less-than-expected finale can provoke a deeper conversation within ourselves, and for that, I am grateful.
